Why do we need freedom, anyway?

The subject of freedom is an incredibly difficult aspect to present. Freedom is an issue of convention, an abstract entity – it cannot be presented directly. It can be shown with other means or its presence may just be implied. An artist is a kind of “a sign of the times” and this is because of all his or her actions related to the individual perception of the world and its phenomena, as well as all the pain and joy an artist experiences. Freedom is defined with an act of awareness, internal responsibility balancing upon indefinite space of one’s own metaphysical aspect. The question “Why do we need freedom?” thus becomes equivalent to the artistic prerogative of responsibility and predictability of the future contemporaneity.

The starting point are four 20th-century artists: Witkacy, Władysław Hasior, Jerzy Bereś and Tadeusz Kantor. The underlying reason for the concept are two works: Nie zabrną me twory popod żadne strzechy, bo… by Witkacy and Wyszywanie charakteru. by Władysław Hasior

The presentation will include the works by the abovementioned four artists as well as others, such as: Marcin Berdyszak, Jarosław Kozłowski, Krzysztof Skarbek, Andrzej Nowacki, Edward Dwurnik, Leon Chwistek, Zbigniew Pronaszka, Zbigniew Warpechowski, Józef Szajna, Tadeusz Małachowski, the Łódź Kaliska and The Krasnals groups, Antoni Rząsa, Wojciech Zamiara, Michał Kokot, Andrzej Tobis, Robert Rumas, Wojciech Woźniak and Krzysztof Wojciechowski.
