The Simultaneity of Events exhibition hosted at the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Toruń will feature a collection of works by young laureates and finalists of last year’s editions of the Hestia Artistic Journey competition. The Toruń-based exhibition is a landmark event bringing together two seemingly remote points of view, blending a generational and a temporal perspective, where representatives of both parties have equal say.
Yet again, Hestia Artistic Journey sets out on a tour across Poland to present works by young HAJ laureates to the general public. This time, it will make a stop in Toruń to showcase the Simultaneity of Events exhibition. The exhibition consists of nineteen works by young artists who created them at a specific point in time, when they were still students of fine arts departments at various Polish universities. They decided to express their point of view on a specific topic by taking part in the competition. Although particular works took were created over several years, their authors all worked on them at a similar point in life – as young explorers, commenting the reality and shaping their artistic identity. Their language, the topics they address and the techniques they use vary. What unites them is the same moment in life, when their view of the world and of art was noticed by the jury, enabling them to win the competition.
“Piotr Szpilski put the exhibition together by selecting works by fifteen young artists. The pieces differ in terms of their theme and manner of artistic expression, but have one common denominator – the time of creation. On the one hand, they can be woven into an abstract map of mutually intersecting themes, on the other hand, they present a single common image of experience and reflection, bringing the artist and the viewers closer together,” explains Mateusz Kozieradzki, curator at the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Toruń.

Hestia Artistic Journey is more than a competition which has already been organized for 15 years, facilitating 24 art residencies in New York and Valencia and assembling a collection of more than 30 works of art. It also comprises a year-round program of promotion of young art, thanks to which 33 individual and collective exhibitions have been organized across the country:
“We introduce the works by competition participants to the public in various regions in Poland – visiting both smaller and larger towns. I hope that the exhibition in Toruń becomes an inspiring and compelling journey in “space-time” for local viewers. A journey which will open our eyes to present-day relevance of the topics addressed by young artists in the past,” says Magdalena Kąkolewska, President of the Hestia Artistic Journey Foundation.
The Simultaneity of Events exhibition is organized by the Hestia Artistic Journey Foundation, which thus seeks to contribute to the development of the competition finalists and laureates and to be involved in subsequent stages of their art career. Every year, the winners are sent on an artistic trip to New York and Valencia. The laureates’ works are also on tour, to be introduced to the broader public in various regions of the country – in towns both large and small. The exhibition in Toruń is yet another opportunity – after Częstochowa, Kraków, Poznan, Głogówek, Wrocław, Sopot, Warsaw and Kalisz – to learn about the unusual perspective of young artists and about their view of the world.
