The newest show hosted by the Centre of Contemporary Art Znaki Czasu in Toruń stands a chance of becoming one of the most important exhibitions of the 2024 summer season in Poland. It is the first presentation of one of the longest-standing and most noteworthy Polish private collections of contemporary art in its new shape. It is no exaggeration to say that the dynamic development of the art market in our country was initiated by Wojciech Fibak and his École de Paris collection, displayed across museums and galleries since the late 1990s. Outstanding collectors today claim that their passion for art was stirred by Wojciech Fibak’s accomplishments.
An area of 2,000 square metres on CoCA’s first and second floor houses more than 200 outstanding paintings and sculptures created by classic artists as well as creators from the New Generation in Polish art. The older generation includes Andrzej Wróblewski, Jan Lebenstein, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Wojciech Fangor, Jerzy Nowosielski, Leon Tarasewicz, Izabella Gustowska, Teresa Pągowska, Jan Berdyszak, and many more contemporary classics. Also on show are works by artists from the middle generation: Wilhelm Sasnal, Marcin Maciejowski, Agata Bogacka, Jakub Julian Ziółkowski, Karol Radziszewski and Aleksandra Waliszewska.
However, the greatest surprise and attraction of the show are works by New Generation artists, including Ewa Juszkiewicz, Karolina Jabłońska, Agata Kus, Agata Słowak, Martyna Czech, Mikołaj Sobczak, Emilia Kina, Tomasz Kręcicki, and others. Frequently displayed at home and abroad and highly sought by collectors, their paintings are winning auctions, topping rankings, and arousing strong emotions. The Fibak Collection contains works by leading New Generation artists.
The exhibition presents classic and New Generation artists side by side in a way that is both surprising and thought-provoking as it reveals unstraightforward connections: parallel contexts and continuation of certain themes or, at least, an awareness of there being a link between artists of different ages.
Thirty years ago Wojciech Fibak set a fashion for collecting in Poland, initially focusing on works by established creators active within the School of Paris. Today, his interest has shifted to the New Generation and although it has been in vogue for several years now, the Fibak Collection provides a recapitulation of this phenomenon and brings certain order to it.
The exhibition is accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue and educational programme.
